East London Travel Guide

What to do; where to stay and where to shop while visiting East London.

Welcome to East London, an understated jewel of the Sunshine Coast of South Africa and stepping stone to the Transkei and the Wild Coast areas. The only city in South Africa which has three navigable rivers within city limits, a metropolis where industry and recreation stand side by side. Home of the first Grand Prix track in Africa, the Mercedes Benz (Daimler) South African plant and the only river port in South Africa.

From a recreational viewpoint, East London is blessed with the wonderful Gonubie; Bonza Bay and Nahoon Beaches, the Nahoon Reef, a sought after destination for surfers and paddlers and the fourth best member managed Golf Club in South Africa, the East London Golf Club, home to many international tournaments, the SA Open and the Africa Cup, both European Tour events to name but two.

East London - Nearby Game Reserves and natural attractions

Mpongo Park and Inkenkwezi are two private game reserves which one can reach in under an hours drive from East London. They both offer meals; self-drive and guided tours for day visitors. The Lion Park is approximately 30 minutes from East London. Here guests can interact with many animals and get really close up.

The Addo Elephant Park is approximately two and a half hours drive, a little far for a day trip but worth a visit if you’re in the Eastern Cape.

The East London Museum offers visitors an opportunity to view the history of the region. Exhibits include that of the Coelacanth, believed to be extinct for millions of years until identified by fishermen along the coast. The Museum and the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve carefully protect the oldest know fossils of modern mans’ existence. Trace footprints, identified as a young child crossing the dunes together with prints of small antelope were discovered in a cave off Nahoon Point.

East London also has a lovely but small aquarium, the features of which are a boardwalk over the sea where one can often see dolphins and whales frolicking in the Indian Ocean and also the seal show which takes place daily just before noon.

East London - Shop and restaurant guide

Riverbend is situated in the East London suburb of Beacon Bay in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. We are located near to some lovely restaurants and also the shopping malls of Spargs; Retail Park and The Hub. A little further afield lie two large malls, Vincent Park and Hemmingways. The latter also has a Casino and Hotel. The exchange rate of the ZAR (South African Rand) makes shopping for international or foreign travellers an absolute bargain. By example, a beer at a restaurant will only cost around 1 US Dollar and a decent hamburger will only set you back two to three dollars. At the time of writing (April 2016) the exchange rates are approximately 1GPP = R22; 1 USD = R15.20 and 1 EURO = R17.16.
